Alton Towers: Hex Experiences

On the 16th of May 2024, the YouTube paranormal researcher 'Don't Scare Claire' shared a number of images to Facebook. These images were texts from an Alton Towers ride operator, and they also included images of an unexplained piece of CCTV footage. The texts were sent to Claire in response to a video she made on YouTube which covers the history of Alton Towers along with it's hauntings. To make sure that this employees experiences are easier to find than in images on Facebook, or spoken in a YouTube video, this article will document everything that they've said. At the very end of the article, I will include the images of the texts so that you know exactly how everything was said as I will make minor corrections in grammar and spelling in order to make for an easier read.

The Experiences

'Hello! I'm an Alton Towers rides employee! I worked on Hex for the majority of last year when it was open; and closed too. I can confirm in your video about it that it is immensely paranormal. Whilst in the batching area (Armoury), me and my work colleague were cleaning up after ride close. We have to mop, change the bins, etc. Within that airline there's tvs. Now we only have access to the remotes to turn them on, they're normally left within the batching panel after we turn them off. We were up by the entrance door, and from here you can see the cinema lights. The cinema is where you watch about the curse of Charles and the chained oak. As we were mopping, one of the tvs, not all, just turned on. We thought nothing of it and continued cleaning, went back down, got the remote, and turned it off. Then the cinema lights turned off too. They have an entirely different system to the lights that require a fish key to turn off and on, there's a story that goes around that in there with the staff.'

'It's insane!! There's been photos taken by staff with a little girl in the left hand side of the cinema, we've had rocks thrown at us, fire doors opening, shows just randomly turning on. I can honestly say I wasn't a believer in any of this stuff until I worked in Hex myself. Also, the things about the gardens, and the Japanese style water fountain, are all true :) '

'But the thing about the woman and the strong perfume smell, she's well known to all of us. Still roams around the towers, especially the chapel!'

'I'll also pass you on the photos I've took, the one of the cctv I took 2. In one of them the corner is blurry and the other one is normal. None of us can actually figure out why, I know it's happened to someone else too.'

'There's a gardener's house within the gardens. There's been thudding and low voices that have been heard within it. It's been used for storage for years and nobody goes in there anymore; you ask any of the cleaners and they swear to stay away from it. There's also a tunnel on the right hand side of the towers, it's where the servants used to walk up to give them their food. There's been sightings of figures in that tunnel too!'

My Thoughts

Firstly, a huge thank you to Don't Scare Claire for being alright with me using these images and messages in an article. She's been incredibly helpful and communicative in discussing this topic. As for my thoughts on what this employee has shared, I think it backs up what I've researched about Alton Towers. In that article, I documented that the armoury, which is the entrance to Hex, was an incredibly active area; and this employee does well to back that up. I believe the two cctv images show the batching area of hex, which is the room everyone waits in before moving through the cinema room that discusses Charles Talbot and the curse. I don't know enough about cameras to know what could cause the blur, but speculation could be some sort of moisture on the lens. It would have been incredibly interesting to see a video of the footage rather than images, but I understand potential circumstances as to why only images were taken.

The poltergeist activity reported by the staff member also lines up with what can be found online, as there are reports of extreme poltergeist activity from when the armoury used to be a shop. The little girl being pictured is interesting, and it would be fantastic if an employee could share one of these images. If there is a little girl present in the towers, then that could potentially explain who's responsible for the poltergeist activity. The perfume smell could be a good indicator to Lady Shrewsbury being present, as has been speculated.

The gardener's house being haunted is incredibly interesting, especially if this is the Swiss Cottage where Charles Talbot housed a blind Welsh harpist who he employed to fill the gardens with music. If this is the case, activity in this location could potentially respond to music being played. It seems odd to me though that, if this is the same house, the hauntings seem to be viewed as thought they are negative in nature and potentially dangerous. This makes me wonder if maybe the cleaners have misunderstood the hauntings, or if maybe they've exaggerated elements to possibly keep employees out of areas they aren't supposed to be in.

I can absolutely believe that the servant tunnels are haunted. Last year was my first time doing the Altonville Mine Tours scare-maze, and it's queue line leads through this tunnel. It was a slow moving queue, and so I was stood in that tunnel for a fair while, and it does have a somewhat ominous feeling about it. I find that area in general does too, although this could be because it's fairly barren. I didn't see or experience anything in that tunnel, aside slight impatience towards the queue and nervousness towards the maze, but it's still interesting to hear about a haunting at Alton Towers which I hadn't found information on while researching the location.

Thank You!

Thank you for reading to the end of this article, and again a huge thank you goes to Don't Scare Claire for being alright with me writing this article and for providing the texts discussed! If you want to watch her videos, you can click the link below:

I really did enjoy reading these texts as it's always great to read someone's paranormal experiences, especially when it's the experiences of an employee what works at a reputedly haunted location such as Alton Towers. It's often with these more personal experiences that hauntings which no one knows about are often shared, such as what was discussed about the cottage or little girl. It reminds me of when a staff member told me about the Wickerman gift shop being haunted.
