OVERNIGHT's Haunted Homies E1: Emily's graveyard experiences
Emily's first experience:
'The very first time I ever experienced something paranormal was when some old friends of mine convinced me to go to the graveyards with them in the middle of the night when I was like fifteen. I don't even know why they would think that's a good idea, but ok. I was just kind of going with whatever they wanted to do 😂 so we went to three different ones in the course of like five hours. The first one was a wierd circle layout in the middle of the woods, literally don't even know why, or where it was, this day. But anyways, we're just walking around and my friend Peyton was like 'oh my god guys, there's a coffin coming out of the ground' and we're like 'what?' And then she goes over and touches it and jokes about opening it while we're all just standing there like 😐, and after she did that it got super cold, mind y'all, this was June and south Texas where there's no such thing as being cold in the summer, and we all noticed it but shrugged it off and then we started hearing what sounded like little kids either screaming or playing, and we saw a street light in the distance, and we were like 'okaaay, it's probably just kids at their house being loud or whatever' so we keep walking and as soon as we walk out of this graveyard we stop hearing the kids, it stops being cold, and the streetlight wasn't where it was anymore.'
Emily's second experience:
'The second one we went to was closer to civilisation, but I still don't know where exactly it was LOL, but this one we had to literally hop the fence, so that's fun, and anyways we started walking around and we started seeing, like, orbs around some of the headstones, and then we get under this one really big tree and then one of my other friends says she sees either a really really tall headstone or a shadow person, so we all look over and see it. Then I suddenly get super anxious and scared and felt like something knocked all of the energy out of me, so I had one of my other friends walk me back to the truck. We got out of the graveyard only to look over to where the tall headstone was and not see it anymore... so that's whack.'
Emily's third experience:
'Then, at the third one I was too scared to go in so I stayed in the truck while they went and looked around. Literally was so scared at this point that I was shaking and looking down towards the ground and singing to keep from being too paranoid. Eventually I calm myself down and I'm just chilling but not even two minutes after I stopped freaking out: something knocks on the passenger side window, a huge flash of light in front of the truck, and there was a perfect circle of fog that formed on the drivers side window. It could have just been because of the humidity, but usually this only happens on our car window because our AC is really cold inside the car and it's really humid outside, buuuuuuuuuuuuuut the truck wasn't even on and it literally appeared out of nowhere, so Idk man. So, my friends come back a few minutes later and they were like 'did anything happen?' So I told them all from the start and they all started freaking out and then they tell me they heard loud footsteps over near the truck but didn't come back because they didn't see anyone walking outside or around.'
Emily Q&A:
Corey:
'That area, is it known to be haunted? Like do multiple people have stories from around there?'
Emily:
'Yeah, I mean kind of, I mean it's in like the south part of Texas, like near Houston, like an hour north of Houston, and like, it's like supposedly a lot of underground railroad type of stuff and like Indian burial ground thing. Apparently, like, the whole entire county that I live in is like 'cursed by Indians' and stuff like that.'
Corey:
'It's what they say about the town I grew up in too, that's why they say how the Ouija board so quickly, at least for me when I was young, got so active and open stuff in there because apparently my town was built on an Indian burial ground as well so I'm glad that we share that in common. Did anything happen after that though, like do you feel like anything followed you or you got bad look or?'
Emily:
'You know, it's kind of funny because ever since then like even up until this point that I'm at right now in life, I've had experiences like here and there, like I've had to cleanse my house a few times, and like my mum would be like sitting watching TV (...) and see like shadows like running behind her and stuff, and like it would be like two in the morning and my brother and I would be asleep, but she didn't tell us until like a year later whenever it got brought up at a shop.'
Summary of activity:
1. Cold spot
2. Kids screaming/playing (audio)
3. Orbs (one large and single in distance, plus multiple around headstones)
4. Shadow figure (outdoor)
5. Sudden fear, anxiety, and forceful loss of energy
6. Knocking (single on window)
7. Flash of light
8. Fog circle (on window)
9. Footsteps (outdoor)
My own thoughts and comments:
The first thing I want to mention is that this post is a big reason why I run this blog, why I watch the OVERNIGHT channel, and why I have chosen to discuss their videos. I want to highlight personal experiences which no one will ever of heard about, and I want to find trends in these experiences to see what is and isn't possible with the paranormal and just to see where the boundaries are. The next thing I want to mention is that the Q&A section written above is not the entirety of that section from the video. I've quoted as best I can and I've taken the most useful (least joke filled) part to help me discuss and analyse. Plus, what they discuss in the part I've quoted is similar to a story in itself.
Emily was fifteen at the time of the story and says in the video that there was no alcohol involved. She hasn't gone back to the graveyards, but her and her friends like to go ghost hunting. She even said her friends bring salt with them just in case. She also says the coffin was sticking out of the ground enough so that you could open it if you wanted to and that her parents don't really talk about the paranormal, but her mum grew up with lots of superstitions. She also said her house has been cleansed a few times. It was also clarified in the video that the 'street light' wasn't a physical electrical street light but instead just a light in the distance that was so bright they assumed it was a street light.
Now onto my own thoughts about the experience. I think this is an interesting experience, which I do believe happened, but I can think of some explanations to some things. A big issue for me is that no time of day was stated, but I assume it's dark due to the talk about street lights. This leads me on to the cold spot and kids. I don't know what Texas is like, so I will take Emily's word for it not ever being cold in Texas. I know we have nights in the UK where it can be incredibly warm and humid, so I'm assuming it was a night like that. For this reason I think the cold spot is an interesting example of paranormal activity, especially as it occured after her friend was joking around with the coffin. I'm sure this behaviour could have been seen as antagonistic or disrespectful so I would expect for at least one spirit to have made their presence known in that moment. As for the children, I think Emily and her friends should have looked at the ages on the nearby gravestones. From the sound of it, it was late and unlikely for kids to be playing near the graveyard so I think the spirits were intentionally trying to scare Emily and her friends out of the graveyard.
During Emily's second experience, she describes seeing orbs and a shadow figure before feeling incredibly frightened and lacking in energy. I think the orbs are probably just fireflies. The shadow figure could be either an oddly cast shadow or, more likely, a gravestone they misplace when looking back later. Ideally they would walk closer and investigate, or shine a torch on it, but I can understand the hesitancy. The emotional effect the experience has on Emily is interesting. I could say she felt as she did because of the adrenaline of the moment, or something like low blood sugar, but I have had a similar experience and so I think what she felt was probably due to the paranormal. My own experience involved me strongly sensing a spirit and, like Emily, I was overcome with fear to the point where I had to leave the area I was in at the time. It isn't said what they were doing or saying in this graveyard before this turn occurred, but due to them having an experience in each graveyard I suspect something followed them around that night to make sure they didn't disturb other graves. As they saw a shadow figure in the distance, this could very well have been the spirit warning them that it was watching.
For the third experience, I'm curious how close the truck was to the road and what the weather was like. The flash of light was possibly a very brief bout of distant lightning as they didn't hear any other vehicles. Although, I think it could be more likely that Emily's friends were messing with her for this experience. She described how she was looking down when in the truck, so her friends could easily have knocked on the door window, shone a torch through the front window, and then breathed on the glass of the door window to create the fog patch. They may have mentioned themselves hearing footsteps to her just incase she had heard them moving around the truck and suspected them. I find it a little suspicious that they asked her if anything had happened when she was alone in the truck, a location they considered safe and not at all haunted. There also seems to be no purpose to the activity if it was paranormal. I speculated the other two experiences could be legitimate because of the motive the spirit would have regarding keeping the group out of graveyards, or at the least keeping them respectful. Here, Emily wasn't in a graveyard, her friends were, and all they claimed to experience was hearing footsteps near the truck. For me, if the friends were faking it, this puts the kids singing into doubt a little bit too given one of the friends could have been playing that quietly on their phone, and if Emily was gullible then she could have fallen for it.
So, in conclusion, I would like to think the first two experiences are solid which puts the first five bullet points of activity as being possible. I think they show antagonising a spirit, especially when in a graveyard, is going to get you some form of activity. I also think it shows spirits can follow you for a brief moment of time if they want. I would definitely like to post more of these experiences and look forward to seeing the range they show. This particular experience was hard to comment on due to the lack of details, and because it was Emily and her friends... it's hard not to blame her friends.
