Most Haunted Halloween Week PT2 Review
On the 1st of November 2023, Most Haunted released the second part of their Halloween investigation to their youtube channel. I have not yet seen anything they've released beyond this video as I don't want the future three parts to sway my view of this second part. I have seen and reviewed the first part though, and as a result may refer back to that review at times. This review will likely be quite lengthy, but I will break it down into segments just as I did with my previous review.
It's important for me to say that I will give both praise and criticism where I see fit, and I will try to be as fair as I can. Personally, I believe the paranormal exists but I don't believe everything I see is paranormal, and so this is the mindset I will have while writing this review.
The Introduction
This episode of Most Haunted is not a typical episode. Usually the format of a Most Haunted episode is along the lines of: Introduction, History, Walkaround, Investigation, Conclusion. Instead, the first part of this Halloween special has already dealt with giving us the history and it's already shown the team conduct the initial walkaround of the property where the team discuss which areas may be the most active. Due to that, this episode pretty much jumps right into the investigation, so the introduction segment is quite short.
The episode starts just as any other episode of Most Haunted with the screen saying 'the following programme is definitely NOT for entertainment purposes only. We stand by the legitimacy of this investigation', followed by the Most Haunted theme and logo. I've said I will always praise this, and so will do so again; I really like that the episode begins with the statement I've quoted. It sets the episode up as being absolutely real, and so it really puts their careers on the line if anything was to be spotted as being fake in the episode.
There are then some really good shots of each location they're investigating, and Yvette says a detail I am certain she didn't say in the previous part. In the previous part she refers to the location as 'Ribblesdale Hall' and 'the surrounding estate', but here she directly says they're investigating the 'Gisburne Estate'. It isn't a contradiction in information, I just found it odd that she gave the name of the whole estate here in part two and not in part one.
I was also quite confused as to the very short segment where Yvette narrates saying 'here is where we left you last time', only to show very brief footage of the team leaving the main building. I have no issue with a recap of sorts being shown here, and that's what I expected from Yvette's narration, but instead of some sort of recap montage it was just brief footage of the team leaving. It was very strange and seemed unnecessary to feature.
This is where Yvette's narration says 'I sent Glen to the upper living quarters, Gregg to the hospital wing, Stuart to the cottage, whilst Karl and I went to the psychiatric building.' I am very happy that the narration gave us a summary of where everyone was, as sometimes programmes broken down into parts like this can neglect to keep us up to date with this kind of information as they assume you've seen the previous part and so will know where everyone is.
Yvette and Karl: The Psychiatric Building Part 1
The episode then picks up from where the previous part left off, which is of Yvette and Karl standing beneath an umbrella outside the psychiatric building. This time, we see them enter the building and I have a bit of an issue fairly early on. Shortly after the pair enter the building Karl says 'why's it already I feel like I don't wanna be in here?' I have said this before when discussing Most Haunted, and will keep saying it because it is relevant: Karl is the producer of the programme. For this reason, I absolutely understand why he would say things like this as he, as the producer, will want the video to perform well regarding views and to get and keep views you need to either have things happen, or you need to build good tension. Karl saying this line helps to build the tension.
The issue I have with Karl saying the line is that I think he goes about saying it the wrong way. Feelings of unease is a common trait amongst haunted locations, so I have no issue in him trying to portray this happening. My concern is that he is a paranormal investigator, and has been for at least twenty years. The Most Haunted team have investigated so many haunted locations across the UK that nothing should surprise them or take them off guard at this point, and they shouldn't be saying they don't want to be investigating somewhere. A better phrasing would have been 'there's a real feeling of unease here' or 'I don't know what it is, but since stepping through the doors it feels like there's a really negative energy here'. I know it's a really minor criticism, as it boils down to the wording of a phrase, but it's still valid to mention.
Yvette leads the way through the building and Karl confesses that he has already entered the building before now. He explains that he was trying to find Stuart at the time and that he didn't get far into the building. He even points to a particular space in the room and says 'I got to about here'. It's good that he discloses that now, with Yvette, wasn't his first time in the building, and it is also good that he says exactly how far he got into the building before he left. However, if his reason was to look for Stuart, I don't know why he didn't search the whole building, and I don't know why he didn't just call Stuart as we saw in the previous episode that Stuart tried to call him and that he even saw he was getting a call from Stuart. As a result, this just gives me questions.
Karl also builds on my previous criticism here by saying that when he entered the building earlier, it felt horrible. He also says 'doesn't it feel horrible to you?' to Yvette and this is something I really disagree with. She responds with 'yeah, hating it', but if she feels a certain way about a place then she needs to say so of her own accord. Karl clearly asks her a leading question which helps to build his narrative about the place seeming really awful in order to build suspense for the viewer.
The narrative Karl is seemingly pushing is further added on when Yvette points out some piled up mattresses and Karl responds by saying there's even something eerie about that. We get a short break from the narrative as they keep walking and call out 'hello' and 'is anyone here' as they walk. As they keep walking, Karl reiterates the location being horrible, and Yvette points out some bottles on the floor. Karl then points to something on the window of a door, which is a bit glittery, and says things like that make it worse as someone's put it there to make it feel more homely.
For me, this is way too much narrative pushing. Through most of the segment Karl is speaking like it's his first paranormal investigation, and it really isn't. All that has happened up to this point is Karl and Yvette have walked through a corridor saying 'hello'. Yes it's an abandoned location, but the Most Haunted team should be well and truly used to the abandoned aesthetic by now.
Karl then hears a noise, but Yvette says it was just the door. Karl seems unsure, so asks for her to do it again, and once she moves the door again he agrees that it was the door. I know I'm being really critical of Karl, but you've got to consider he is an investigator with over twenty years of experience, and in the previous episode he was wanting to do all of this by himself. I don't understand why he seems far more on edge than Yvette. This leads me to the conclusion that everything he says in this segment is just to build the tension for the viewers, and that isn't good when it blurs into things like hearing a noise. This is that fine line of not faking things, but not necessarily being completely truthful either. It's a very important thing for me to mention. Yvette then keeps calling out things such as 'come and say hello' before the footage cuts from Yvette and Karl to Stuart.
Stuart: The Cottage Part 1
During the previous part, the location Stuart is in was referred to as 'the farmer's cottage', but in this episode it was referred to as 'the cottage', so I will refer to it as that. This cottage is different to the cottage the Most Haunted team has dubbed as 'the witches cottage', which is another location they're investigating across the five part Halloween special.
As mentioned earlier by Yvette, Stuart is alone in the cottage. As the viewer, we are led to believe he has no one else with him in the building, and so as no one else appears on camera at any point we should take their word for it as we have no evidence to the contrary. This is the angle I will be looking at the segments for Stuart, for Gregg, and for Glen, as Most Haunted to strongly claim their investigations are legitimate. I will, however, still acknowledge both sides of the arguement.
We see Stuart enter the cottage and straight away he says 'God, the energy in here'. This is very good, and is exactly the kind of thing I said Karl should have been saying earlier when discussing the atmosphere of the location. He doesn't say it's positive, he doesn't say it's negative, he just implies it feels like there is lots of energy there. He then closes the door and apologises for the wobbly camera while he wipes the lense. As he does this, he says 'this is real time so things happen in real time' which is a phrase I don't understand. If he was live streaming then I would understand it, but as far as I'm aware the footage wasn't live streamed to anywhere, so this phrase just seemed odd. The only thing I can think is he was saying there weren't multiple takes of filming, so everything, such as him entering the building, was the first and only take.
He says it's the first time he's been in the building and that he doesn't know the layout, which I'm glad he discloses as it explains why he's reacting in certain ways to the environment and it means he has no pre-formed opinions of the location. A really good thing Stuart says here is 'it doesn't feel good, probably because it's dark, it's cold, it's windy, it's raining, it's cold in here, it looks in shit order, there's just stuff... there's paint peeling off the wall.' I think this is a brilliant acknowledgement of reasons why he's going to be biased in thinking the location is negative. It's also a good mention of a couple of things, such as wind and rain, which could cause things to happen which seem paranormal but aren't.
Stuart also says 'it doesn't bode well, does it?' which shows immediate bias. Right away he's looked at the location falling apart and made a judgement that it must be negative, which isn't good as he hasn't experienced anything yet to imply any spirits present, if any, are negative in nature. It is good though that he has somewhat acknowledged his bias because then if he does start labelling any potential spirit as negative, which he does, then we know this is likely due to his bias from the setting. He keeps commenting on the state of the location as he walks into the next room.
He then makes an excellent point by saying even though he isn't asking out, the fact he's there and talking wil let the spirits know he's there and they'll be able to hear him. It's a somewhat muddled point, but he's basically saying that he doesn't have to directly ask out for spirits to know he wants activity. The location is abandoned, he's exploring it, he's thinking about spirits being present, and so that should be enough to let the spirits know he wants to communicate. I think it's also a very true point as it implies the spirits are always present, always watching, and always listening. Personally, I'm not a believer in the 'other realm' talk investigators sometimes use, so it's interesting seeing Stuart imply he isn't either. The footage then cuts to Glen and Gregg.
Glen: The Upper Living Quarters Part 1
As you can see from the image above, Glen and Gregg start their footage together from the same point in the building. I like this as it shows, until there is a cut in the camera, that these two cannot be near one another as they're on different floors of the building. Glen says they're in the hospital wing, and Gregg comments that they're going to be switching all the lights off.
This is where the two part ways with Gregg wandering off down a corridor and Glen going up the stairs. Glen comments that he will be switching off all the lights as he walks around and that he's going to go up two flights of stairs. He also says the first floor is where his computer is, and that it might be picking up his voice as he walks past that floor. This is a good time to say this whole episode is very strange from an investigatory point of view as this evp capturing laptop is the only bit of equipment the team makes reference to during the episode. The entire episode is a very old school investigation consisting of people on camera calling out and reacting to things. There are no cat balls, no k2 meters, no rem pods, no hand held evp recorders, it's very old fashioned in comparison to what you tend to see from modern investigations.
There isn't anything wrong with them not using equipment, I know some teams prefer to use their senses and see what they capture on camera. The paranormal has existed long before modern technology, and so I can understand why some people would think such technology isn't required to detect paranormal phenomena. Personally, I would like to see some sort of technology be used in investigations as it helps create something physical to what they're experiencing which we can either clearly see or clearly hear. This does make me glad Glen has a laptop set up which is capturing evps.
As Glen continues to walk, he says that the safety lights are still on in the building. He also says the area is a living quarters away from the hospital, and refers to it as an 'attic space of rooms'. He also says they've found activity may build the longer you stay in a place, which is a really good point to mention. I would have liked for him to elaborate on the point with a theory as to why this could be, but it's still good he's mentioned it. It also builds on something Karl commented on in the first part video when they were hearing banging in the witches cottage and questioned why it all started when it did, and he said they'd been in there for a while so it could be their energy. This makes Glen's comment here really good as I do think the team should be referring back to previous experiences as often as they can, and they should be building on them.
Glen also comments on the rain and the wind, which is really good of him to do, plus he even zooms in on a window to show the rain as best he can. He says noise might be caused by these things, and he also says that when exploring creepy abandoned places, any sounds can be mistaken as being paranormal. These are brilliant comments, and it's very good to see Glen making them as he acts as the team's skeptic. The footage then cuts to earlier when Gregg was still with Glen.
Gregg: The Hospital Wing Part 1
This section starts with the amazing detail of going right back to when Glen was still with Gregg, however we see their conversation from Gregg's camera's point of view. The Most Haunted team could have picked it off from the point where Gregg had left Glen, but instead they pick it up from here which I really appreciate as it shows how the footage overlaps. It also shows that, provided there are no cuts in the footage, Gregg couldn't have interfered with anything Glen experienced.
Gregg tells Glen to go up the stairs, and that he will go down the corridor and switch off the lights as he goes. He also says that he's going to go to the operating theatre to see if he can get damaged like Karl did. I really like that immediately Gregg has set out with this intention to replicate what we saw happen to Karl in the first part where Karl fell to the floor with back pain. I said in my review of that part that the Most Haunted team really need to investigate these occurrences Karl experiences, so I'm thrilled to see a member of the Most Haunted team immediately set out to do that here.
As Gregg walks through the corridors, he says he isn't necessarily looking forward to his investigation given what he's just seen happen to Karl. I find this to be an interesting comment, and don't think he should take what's happened to Karl as an absolute paranormal occurrence, however, he knows Karl well and so will likely trust him, plus the fact it's happened at all does indicate there is at least a minimal chance of the same occuring to him.
He also points out the room the team found the snooker ball in during part 1, and shows the corridor as he switches off the lights. It gives a good reference to the walkaround we saw in the first part. Just as Glen did, Gregg also points out the emergency lights and says he can't do anything about those. He then goes to the operating theatre Karl experienced pain in, and switches off the lights there too. He points out the emergency light and the flashing light on the overhead theatre lights before putting the camera down on a table and going to stand in the same spot Karl stood when he was injured. Gregg then, quite boldly, calls out for the spirits to knock him over like how they knocked over Karl. It's at this point that the footage cuts back to Yvette and Karl.
Yvette and Karl: The Psychiatric Building Part 2
The second part of Yvette and Karl's segment starts with a clunk-type noise occuring and Karl responding with 'what was that?' Again, I don't know why it always seems to be Karl reacting to these things first. Yvette says she heard it and that it sounds like movement behind Karl, so they both go into the corridor behind him and Karl says he thought it came from the other end. Karl calls out 'hello' and Yvette says it sounded like a bit of a movement.
Karl then completely contradicts his attitude from the previous part by saying he couldn't be in there on his own. He calls out 'hello' again, the camera picks up what sounds like two footsteps, and again it is Karl who asks what the sound was. Yvette replies by saying it was proper movement, like someone walking. Two more footsteps can be heard, to which both Karl and Yvette say 'again'.
Yvette does point out that it's raining outside, which is a very good thing to do, except the noise doesn't match dripping water. Karl says if it was the rain then they'd hear it all the time, which is a good point too, and Yvette does agree with it. She asks for the spirits to make the noise again and nothing happens, so they both move away from the door. Yvette says the door will bang as it closes behind them, which is a really good comment, and it again goes to muddle things because if the team faked things I don't know why they wouldn't claim things like doors naturally closing off camera being paranormal too. You could argue they point these things out to make it more convincing though.
Karl then tells Yvette that if it's an actual person making these sounds then 'there'll be one hell of a fight' and says he isn't saying he's going to win. I found this comment quite funny, but again it shows the contradictory nature of Karl's emotions during this Halloween special. During the previous episode he was absolutely up for investigating by himself, then to start this episode he seems to be hating it and extremely frightened, being startled by things and saying he couldn't be in there by himself, but now he's saying he's going to put up 'one hell of a fight' if there is someone there with them. You could argue he is deflecting with comedy, but it just doesn't add up for me.
Yvette then asks Karl where he thinks the sound came from, and he says 'around this area' which leads them to discover the cells. When originally watching this, I didn't have an issue with how both Karl and Yvette react during this segment with the cells; then I looked up the Gisburne Estate. I will include a link to the website at the end of this post, but the page for the estate, which has the booking and contact details I'm assuming Karl will have seen, refers to the psychiatric unit as a psychiatric unit/prison. It even features pictures of these cells. I haven't looked into the history of the building, but I would assume the producer of the programme would be the one to book the location and find out about it. This means, maybe not Yvette, but Karl definitely would know about the location being a prison with cells, and this makes the conversation which follows make no sense. It makes even less sense if Yvette knows about the locations too, which I would assume she would given she tells us about the history of the property during the first part, but she doesn't mention the word 'prison' at all.
Upon finding the cells, Karl sounds surprised that there are cells, and Yvette says 'no' a bunch of times, really sounding shocked at the cells being there. Karl says one of them should stay at the door, just in case, and Yvette says with wide eyes that she doesn't care. She looks extremely shocked at the cells as though this was a complete surprise to her. Karl reiterates that someone should stay at the door just in case it closes, and so Yvette holds the door open with her foot. Karl shows around the cell and points out it isn't even padded. As I said, I haven't looked into the history of the building, but from seeing the cells were part of a prison on the Gisburne Estate website, I am not surprised that they aren't padded as the impression I got was that they weren't cells for the psychiatric unit.
A sound of a possible footstep then occurs which is followed by the sound of a door closing, and so both Karl and Yvette go away from the cells and in the direction of where they thought the noise came from. Yvette says it sounded like it came from the next room, and Karl comments on Yvette being brave going first. She leads Karl into the room and says hello again. Yvette comments that she keeps saying hello, but is only trying to find them. She also says they keep hearing noises and so asks for the spirit to come closer so that they can talk to them.
It's at this point that the first of two moans occur. It's very deep and very clear, especially when listening to it at full volume in headphones. It's important for me to mention that Karl isn't visible on camera when this moan occurs, but giving benefit of the doubt, the moan does sound echoed and not directly next to the camera. Karl says 'what was that?' and a wierd little segment occurs where Karl and Yvette mimick one another. Yvette also says 'what was that?' and immediately says 'it was a voice' a few times, and then Karl says the same thing a few times as she keeps saying it. I found the exchange strange to watch.
Some shuffling then might occur from a corner of the room as Karl and Yvette both look in the direction of the corner after this shuffling sound occurs. It might just have been them that made the noise though as neither of them comment on what the sound they heard was, or what specifically moved their attention to the corner. This is followed by Karl saying he can hear dripping water, but that this isn't the sound he just heard regarding the voice. Yvette confidently says she heard a voice, and this is where some footsteps occur outside the door and Karl points his camera in that direction. He asks Yvette if the sound came from there, and she agrees.
Yvette calls out and asks 'can we hear your voice?' She also says her name is Yvette, and Karl says he is too, and Yvette says she isn't a doctor but for them to say hello anyway. Lots of banging occurs, and Karl says he hopes the camera is picking it up. While the tapping is happening Yvette repeats the word 'tap' in sync with the tapping to indicate to us what is happening and how frequently. She also says hello again and that she doesn't mean any harm. She also offers to help before both her and Karl talk about how scared they feel.
Karl says he feels like something huge is going to happen, and then points out little decorate things on top of the wardrobe which he says makes it feel worse. A reference is made to one of their previous investigations by saying about how they found wardrobes and paintings there too. Yvette now spots a jenga tower and says 'jenga, they've made jenga'. I don't know if she's referring to the spirit, or past residents, but I really hope she's referring to past residents as they have no evidence whatsoever that it was a spirit who made the jenga tower.
Yvette then stops and says there was knocking by the door. Karl says it was on the other side of the door, and both leave the room. I couldn't clearly hear any knocking around this part. Does that mean there wasn't any knocking? No. It just means the camera didn't pick it up, but I do find it odd that both Yvette and Karl heard it and the camera didn't.
Yvette calls out to the spirit again, this time saying it's only Yvette and Karl and that they only want to talk. She also asked them if there's a story the spirits want to tell them before saying 'please don't be frightened'. Karl responds to Yvette by saying 'them frightened?' which I know could just be a joke, but I think it also shows a lack of paranormal understanding and empathy given you don't know anything about the spirit when investigating like this. They're in a psychiatric building, and so it's very possible that you could have very frightened spirits there due to what they may have endured through life. It's also the first time Yvette and Karl have investigated there, and so the spirits may be frightened of the strangers wandering through their space.
Yvette even says 'I know' in agreement with Karl's comment, which I really don't like as it doesn't acknowledge that they know nothing at all about the spirits there, and it just indicates inexperience which is bizarre coming from two very experienced investigators. Yvette does then repeat 'please don't be frightened' and says they're just there to talk to them. On the other side of everything I've just said, I do like that Yvette is at least asking the spirits not to he frightened. Despite Karl's comment, this does show acknowledgement of the possibility that the spirits may be scared of them for some reason.
The pair then enter a room for a few moments where the really deep creaking door of the room creeps out Karl. Nothing happens in the room, and when they leave Karl calls the noise of the door 'horrible' and pulls it closed in order to quieten it. Yvette calls out for the spirit to show themselves, possibly in light form, and Karl remarks that he's shitting himself. Yvette remarks that this is because they're in a psych ward where lots of mental torment will have occured. I agree with Yvette's reason why they'll be so scared, but I really disagree with how vocal Karl has been about it. So far, it has seemed he's taken every opportunity possible to build the narrative of it being an awful location, and so he keeps talking about how horrible everything is and how scared it's making him.
They wander back to the cells, and Yvette says 'who knows what would have happened here?' Karl also says that the cells are where the activity started for them, which I think is a good and accurate comment. I do think hauntings will likely have a focus point to them, so it's good to see Karl identify that point here. Yvette then points to the bolt of the door and says it's sticking out so that it won't close. Karl then reminds her of a previous location they were at where someone called Mary got locked into a cell and they had to get the police and fire brigade to free her. He also says they were told it couldn't physically have locked as it did. I like this information Karl gives about a past investigation as it does help to highlight the fact they are experienced investigators, but again, this seems in complete contradiction to their decorum through the investigation so far.
Yvette then goes into the cell, with Karl keeping his foot against the door. She says it smells in the cell and then comments on hearing more tapping. She asks if the spirit tapping stayed in that cell, and you can hear a knock. Yvette says this means no, and then a second knock occurs. She asks the question again 'just to confirm', and there is one knock to which Yvette says no again. Karl then says he heard two knocks, and that she should ask again after a few moments of pause, which she does. The result is two knocks, which Yvette takes as meaning yes. She asks if they need their help, hears one knock, says no, and then asks if they are angry. Two knocks are heard in response, and so she says 'you are' and asks 'are you angry at the way you were treated?' Lots of tapping occurs in response to this question, and Yvette reacts with a really wierd reaction of looking around the room and saying 'it's in the walls'. Nothing here, to me at least, indicates that the spirit is in the walls as she suggests.
An important thing for me to talk about here is the questions she's asked and the responses she's recieved. I've already made lots of comments about the narrative Karl seems to be building through the episode, and the questions Yvette asks leans into the narrative of the location being horrible, just as Karl keeps saying. Notably, asking the question 'are you angry at the way you were treated' while standing in the cells strongly implies the location was horrible. Again, on the other side, Yvette was missing knocks Karl could hear and wasn't sure on some responses which he provided no input on.
Karl then says he's hearing more to his left and Yvette asks if they're happy where they are now. A noise occurs, and Karl says it was him who made that noise, but no response is given to the question and the subject is dropped. Karl asks if they should go upstairs, and Yvette reacts in a way which says she didn't know there was an upstairs. I find this really odd. Even if she had no hand in researching and booking the location, she should have seen that the building had more than one floor just by looking at it from outside. Yvette says it's bringing back memories of when they were in a prison as that location also had an upstairs. This is the first and only time the word 'prison', despite it being on the location's booking website, is mentioned through the first two parts of the five part investigation. Yvette also points out the lift, and Karl says he doesn't want to get stuck in the lift. The two start making their way up the stairs, and the footage cuts to Stuart.
When the footage cuts back to Stuart, we see him reach the top of the stairs and he says he's assuming they're pretty safe. I have what I deem to be significant issues with this part because it is either a mistake from Stuart, a mistake from Karl, or a mistake from whoever would go through the footage for consistency issues. In the previous part, we saw Karl by himself in this cottage, and we saw him hesitantly go up the stairs. As he does this, he says that he has told the team not to go upstairs because it isn't safe, but that he couldn't stop them if they wanted to.
Now, after that footage was recorded he very well could have said to the team that he went up there, was wrong, and it is actually safe to go upstairs; but if Karl didn't have that change of mind, and did warn the team about the steps, then I don't understand why Stuart has gone up the steps and said he's assuming them to be safe without any reference to Karl's warning. Stuart's attitude to these stairs seems very contradictory to the information Karl gave us in the previous part. I don't doubt the stairs are unsafe, there is one missing after all, but I dont know why Stuart would completely disregard Karl's warning as he seems to here.
He then shows us the toilet, goes into a bedroom, and asks 'is this is? Is this all there is?' I found that comment quite funny, especially after having seen the episode and everything Stuart experiences. He then says that as he's talking, he can hear movement downstairs but isn't going to react to it because he has to take things slow, or he'll have an accident. As someone who hasn't seen every episode of Most Haunted, I have no idea what he's referring to here. I don't like the excuse though. If it's some sort of medical reason regarding a potential heart issue, or something else, then he shouldn't be doing what he's doing. If he's just implying he may end up being in need of the toilet he showed us, then he should have gone before the investigation. I do agree with occasionally stopping and listening to sounds, but you do need to try your best to be quick with finding where the sound is coming from.
Stuart then spots an area of the house he hasn't checked yet, which is a room across the landing, and so he goes up a couple of stairs and into the room. He gets covered in cobweb as he does this, which he reacts in a very funny way to. I have to say, I did really enjoy watching Stuart's segments as I find him really comedic with his reactions. He then says he's getting the layout and that he should go back downstairs.
This is where he calls out: 'if there's anybody here, please do something. My name's Stuart'. He does this from the top of the stairs, and you hear a loud bang occur from downstairs. He reacts by saying 'there we go guys, already, I've not even said anything', which I disagree with as he had literally just said something. He specifically asked them to do something, they did something, and then he reacted shocked and said he didn't ask them to do anything. Later in the episode he does explain that he doesn't always know what he's saying, but he explains that in context of being extremely frightened in the moment, which he doesn't seem to be, and shouldn't be at this point.
He says the noise sounded like something being kicked or punched and crouches on the stairs to look round the corner with the camera, providing as best a view he can of the downstairs area without actually going downstairs. He then says it's stopped and continues making his way down the stairs. He says it sounded like wood and questions what he's doing as he tries avoid stepping in the gap where a stair is missing. He also tries his best to stay calm through this.
Once downstairs he says it sounded like someone kicked a cupboard, and so knocks on various parts of the counter to test if that was what made the noise. He determines he doesn't have a clue what made the noise and that he doesn't want to stay around long enough to find out what it was. Again, I have issues with this. My first issue is he doesn't ever show you the other side of the counter in this video. You can access it, but he doesn't show it. Even when he thinks the noise may have been the counter, he doesn't show all sides of the counter. I'm not saying someone was definitely hiding behind the counter, but I am saying the counter was definitely big enough for someone to hide behind. Stuart should have filmed it to eliminate the possibility of someone being there from the viewer's perspective. My second issue with this part is Stuart does the exact thing I criticised Karl so much for doing earlier. He's a paranormal investigator, has been for roughly twenty years, and he's saying he doesn't want to find out what made the noise and that he doesn't want to stay in the building to investigate. It's his job, no one is forcing him to be there. If he really doesn't like it, and if he's at risk of having an accident by being there, then he shouldn't be there.
He then hears a bang, or rustle, and turns around. He says there is movement coming from the pantry and, after showing us inside the pantry, says there is nothing in there to move. I have a small criticism that I can give benefit of the doubt for. You can clearly see what looks like a coffee cup on a shelf in the pantry which is lying on its side, and so could have been what made the noise. However, I don't know if Stuart was looking at the night vision footage or was just looking at a very dark space. If he was looking at the footage, he absolutely should have seen the cup and so what he says makes no sense. If he was just looking through the dark to determine what moved, he shouldn't have, but it explains why he didn't see the cup.
He then says he needs to calm his breathing and relax. He also says nothing bad is going to happen and that everything is going to be OK. Again, I question why he is there if he is this scared. This is when Stuart starts hearing banging above him. He says he's got walking above, a bang happens, and so Stuart says 'now it's banging'. The banging continues for a short while and then stops. He says there was movement and walking from upstairs, and that it was like someone stomping their foot above him. He also says he can't believe that's happened already and that he's gone really cold. He tries to show his breath on the camera, which looks quite funny as it doesn't work, and so he explains what he's trying to do and that he's trying to show how cold it is because he can see his breath.
Stuart then decides he's going to go upstairs, and shouts this to let the spirit upstairs know he's on his way up. He gets about halfway and stops, saying he can hear movement again. He asks if they're going to do something to him, and some loud bangs happen. Stuart becomes very scared and says it was the front door he heard, and so goes back downstairs to investigate it. He goes to the door and says he heard it slam twice. He tells himself to be careful, and quickly opens it to see if there is someone on the other side. There's no one in sight, although Stuart doesn't show either side of the door from an outside perspective, and says it's windy. I like him acknowledging it could have been the wind, but he immediately rules out the wind as he says it wouldn't have done that.
The door closes by itself, which Stuart says is because of the wind, and says that's the same sound he just heard from upstairs. He questions if the door could have opened the door and closed it twice at the speed he heard, and determines probably not. His second segment then ends with him hearing more banging and saying everything's kicking off. The camera then cuts to Glen.
Glen: The Upper Living Quarters Part 2
Once the camera cuts to Glen, we see him calling out to spirits and asking them to come forward. He also asks them to appear, to talk to him, and to give him a sign that they've been there or permanently reside there. He covers all the basis in this little bit of calling out, which is very good, and doesn't build up any hype or tension with what he says. Nothing happens in response to Glen calling out, and he makes an interesting comment about how the building has changed over the years. He says you wouldn't have thought the room he was in was once somewhere Oliver Cromwell would have stayed in. I really like that Glen references the history of the building as he's doing his walkaround. Out of the five investigators, only Glen and Gregg make reference to either specific detail of the building, or previous things they've experienced there. I think all team members should do this to either connect the history, and therefore potential spirits, to the location, plus by doing this it builds on their previous findings.
Glen then says it's really quiet and that he does want something to happen to him. He keeps walking through the building, says you can hear rain on the roof, and shows the area below where he's standing, which is the area the team went through on the walkaround where there were pool tables and a ping pong table. A noise does occur as he walks to the next door, but he doesn't hear it and says there is a strong smell of tobacco, which he says is odd as there's no smoking in hospitals. Narration from Yvette then highlights the noise you could hear on the camera, and she says it sounds like a child's laughter. Personally, I'm not sure on the noise. It sounds similar to a hiccup as it's two very short high pitched bursts of sounds, so I see why they've interpreted it as a child's laughter, but I'm not sure.
Coincidentally, it isn't too long after this noise occurs that Glen tells us that it's been said children's laughter has been heard in the area he is walking through. He also tells us that the tobacco smell is definitely cigars, and let's us know that he knows this as he is partial to them on rare occasions, as is Karl. He does say that no one has been smoking on the day, but I still find it incredibly interesting that he's told us that Karl smokes cigars, especially as he's acting as the team's skeptic. He also tells us of a story regarding a security guard that used to see someone sitting a the end of their bed, so he'd get up and try to tackle them, but they'd disappear. This story is a really good way of building the tension. Instead of remarking on things in the moment, he's discussed one of the stories connected to the area he is investigating. It builds tension, but it's only commenting on what is said to be there. This is when the camera cuts to Gregg.
Gregg: The Hospital Wing Part 2
When we see Gregg, he's standing exactly where Karl stood in the previous part. He calls out for the spirit to give him a push to let him know they're there, and also asks for them to throw something. This is absolutely brilliant as he's investigating what happened to Karl, and this is exactly what I said the team needed to do in my previous review. He then says he's hearing noises out in the corridor, but says he's going to stay put for a minute. He asks for them to show themself and loud banging, like footsteps, occurs in response. As a result, Gregg picks up the camera and very quickly runs out into the corridor and shows either end as fast as he can. This is really good from Gregg to show that no one is there as best he can, although you could argue he doesn't then check rooms and doors. It is a large location though, you regardless of how much he searches, the arguement would always be posed of 'could he have done more?' and so I do think, even though Karl explained it in the previous episode, that they needed the occasional camera running here and there to show no one was running through corridors at the time the noises occured.
Gregg then tells us he's hearing what sounds like footsteps. They occur again which leads him to a door, so he quickly opens it and shows no one is there. He comments that there is a light on in the toilet which he doesn't remember being on earlier, and asks the spirit to switch the light on again. Nothing happens, so he goes into a different room, the same he was in a moment earlier, and asks again for the light to be turned on. A noise occurs behind him so he asks if they can make the noise again, and if they can make it louder.
He keeps moving through the corridors and does check rooms to make sure no one is there as he goes, plus he switches off those lights too. This wandering leads him to the back corridor and he briefly describes the layout of the corridors and where they all lead. He also points out the emergency lighting. Eventually he ends up back in the operating theatre where Karl was knocked over, and so he again asks for the spirits to do to him what they did to Karl. He asks them to give him a push, a punch, to throw something, or to make a noise. This insistence on investigating what happened to Karl, and seeing if he can replicate it for himself, is really good and I honestly can't praise it enough. A paranormal explanation as to why he isn't getting a replication could be the spirit has used all the energy required to do that on Karl, but even then, clear footsteps are still happening. A footstep is created from a spirit having enough energy to make physical contact with the ground. If the spirit can do that with the ground, there is no reason they can't do that to a person; and so they will have enough energy to replicate some sort of touching phenomena with Gregg, but they don't.
All that happens here is Gregg hears more noises, so again he picks up the camera and quickly runs out of the room again towards the sound. He says he's definitely hearing noises, and comments that the toilet light still isn't on. He asks if the spirits are there, and if so why they're there. He also tells them to show themselves and to stop being a coward. His second section ends with him saying he's hearing footsteps, and that it's like someone's trying to sneak up on him very softly. The camera then cuts back to Yvette and Karl.
Yvette and Karl: The Psychiatric Building Part 3
The footage cuts to Yvette and Karl as they are still making their way upstairs to the second floor of the building. Yvette says she can't help but think of all the troubled people that would have been there, and Karl reassures her by saying it would have been a place for good and they'd have gotten better. This is possibly the closest Yvette and Karl get to discussing any kind of history of the location, and it's really vague. It would have been nice for them to be more specific, or to talk about history which could tie into potential hauntings.
Once upstairs, the two move through the corridor and Yvette warns Karl of a slippery patch on the floor. Karl asks why it's slippery, and he does so in a way which implies it could be paranormal. He does say it has to be something from outside, but his initial 'now why would that be' just sounded too curious for it to be along the lines of thinking it wasn't paranormal. Yvette asks if someone was up there doing G.Vs earlier, Karl says Stuart was, and Yvette does the great thing of quickly dismissing the wet patch as she acknowledges it must have been Stuart. I don't know why Karl didn't reach this conclusion earlier though, especially as he both knew Stuart had been in the building and he even went looking for him in the building.
Yvette asks if anyone is up there with them, and two bangs occur. She says it sounded like footsteps, and that it happened again either side of Karl. So, she asks again if they're there and more footsteps occur. She also asks if they've followed them from downstairs and if they're a man. There's lots of knocking, which Karl says is loud. Yvette says as there are lots of knocks, the spirit isn't saying yes or no to anything.
The two keep moving through the corridor, and Yvette points out it's slippery again. This is where she opens a door into another room and just as the door is coming to a halt, a squeak sound occurs which makes Karl jump. He asks Yvette if she heard it, and she says no, so he tells her it was like a scream or a whine. Personally, I suspect it was the door's hinges. As Yvette was opening the door, she wouldn't have registered the noise as she may have heard it from the door. She also could have assumed Karl was talking about a different sound which occured, especially as he describes it as a scream. It was quite a faint noise which occurs, so I really wouldn't be surprised if it was the door. Karl then leads Yvette back downstairs. I think they first should have ruled out the door instead of going downstairs immediately.
Once downstairs, another loud male moan occurs just before Yvette says 'can you copy me?' Again, Karl's face is not on the camera when this moan occurs. Of course I acknowledge they're limited with only the one camera when it comes to showing his face, but this is why both he and Yvette should be holding a camera. It would capture multiple angles, and it would mean both of their faces can be captured on a camera at any given time. Yvette does say she heard the sound, and says it was a proper moan. She also replicates it to show what she heard. Karl points out to Yvette that the sound has brought them back to the cells, and Yvette says the cells must be the centre of it. Karl refers to this area as a hotspot, which is interesting, although I would refer to it as an energy well.
Yvette asks for the spirit to make the noise again, and Karl slowly closes the cell door while saying he's locking them in. Yvette asks if he heard a noise, and a noise does occur in the distance so Yvette indicates for him to follow her. She says it sounded like the top of a toilet going down. The two enter the same room where we saw Stuart dropping screws on the table in the previous episode, and Yvette asks for the spirits to make the noise again. Nothing happens, so she asks for them to copy her and whistles. There is no response to that either. Karl says stuff is happening, and sounds shocked about it which I found quite funny. The Most Haunted team tend to get something during every video they do, at the very least knocking. They've been investigating for over twenty years, and releasing these videos over that time. If it is all genuine phenomena they experience, like the video claims, I don't understand why Karl is surprised that stuff has been happening when stuff happens in every video they release.
Yvette then looks outside and says she heard a proper rumble. She seems very shocked that no one is there. She whistles again and asks for the spirits to copy her. She also asks for them to moan again, imitates it, and asks the spirit to do that. It's important to say here that there is a wierd cut in the camera around this point. All the footage captured by everyone is filmed as though it is all one continuous take, but it isn't. You have obvious cuts to other cameras, but then you have wierd cuts within sections like the one here. The only other one I noticed occurs when Gregg switches off a light as it cuts from the switch to his face, but no activity happens for him during that segment. Here, with Yvette and Karl, it's a wierd cut which does have something happen shortly after.
Yvette says 'are you here?' This is followed by a distant noise and what sounds like distant speech. No one comments on it, not even narration from Yvette points this out. This is extremely odd because it's very clear on the camera, and it doesn't sound like a mumble from either Yvette or Karl. It does sound male though, which leads to the question of if another team member, as they're all male, was present. Perhaps the wierd cut was a mistake, or occured in the wrong place, to try and hide something? It's also possible that the team have just missed the sound, but as it occurs off camera, and the team highlights all sorts of faint noises through narration, you'd think it would have been addressed. There are also two knocks which occur here. Karl says it was a good start, and the pair say thank you and that they or someone else will be there later. This is followed by them leaving the building while saying the investigation was good. The camera then cuts to Stuart.
Stuart: The Farmer's Cottage Part 3
Stuarts final section begins with him downstairs in the main room of the building. He says 'come on then' to the spirits and then tells himself to shut his mouth. Some more banging occurs, and some really creaky banging occurs above him like someone is jumping lots without their feet leaving the floor. He puts his camera down and sits on the stairs with his head in his hands as though he's never ever experienced anything paranormal in his life and his whole world view has just been shattered. As I keep saying, I really don't understand these reactions during this investigation.
He suddenly jumps up and picks up the camera while saying something was just walking down the stairs. He is so convinced that it was a person that he asks if someone is sleeping rough upstairs. If he has properly searched the house to check no one there, this thought shouldn't even occur to him. There is no way someone could have entered the house, and gone past him to get upstairs from the footage we have seen as he has been staying around the stairs. Either way, he asks them to walk downstairs. No one does, and Stuart says he's just seen a flash of light occur in the corner of the room and says he doesn't know if the camera caught it. It didn't. He approaches the spot and points to where he saw the light come from, and asks the spirit to show themselves in light form again.
Very soon after, he says he's seen the light again out of the corner of his eye from towards the stairs. It is important for me to say there is a window beside the stairs, so it's possible he's just seen a reflection, or a light from outside, and mistaken it for a spirit. He describes the light as like someone turning a torch on and off but with no click. He then calls the spirit an 'evil bastard', says they're 'not nice', and says that 'there's gotta be something wrong with you to live in this shit tip'. I really disagree with Stuart's attitude here. He has had no evidence at all to suggest the spirit is negative in nature, and it isn't like the spirit can renovate the house at will. It could have been a really nice house, someone could have died there, and from that point the house could have fallen into disrepair. You should never judge the spirit based on the location, and Stuart should know this.
He also says he should go back upstairs to see no one is up there, but then says it's alright doing that, but he knows nothing will happen and he won't see anything if he does. He also says if something does happen, it will then likely happen downstairs as that's how it tends to go. He hears more banging though, so quickly goes back upstairs and into one of the rooms. He says the banging occured from somewhere in there. This whole section is filmed a bit odd, and I didnt notice this until rewatching, but while he has the camera pointed at the doorway, the door is off centre. Plus, it isn't just off centre, it's off centre in a way where you cannot see the edge of the open door, which opens into the room. As a result, you cannot see how close the door is to the wall, and you cannot see if anyone is behind it; which is something Stuart should have shown when showing no one is in the room. I'm not saying someone was behind the door, just as I'm not saying someone was behind the counter, but if someone was behind the door and their arm was to accidentally stick out, the way this would filmed would hide it.
When in the room, Stuart says nothing is in there and then says he's seen another light anomaly at the top of the stairs. He also says he doesn't know if the camera caught it in infra red, which it doesn't. He asks for the spirit to show themself in light form again, and introduces himself again. A really funny moment then happens where Stuart offers the spirits drugs. He says 'I can get you something', and clarifies that he has nothing on him. He apologises to the camera for what he's saying, and explains that when he panics he says random stuff, which could explain a number of things he's said so far, although none have been on the same level as 'I can get you something'. He even asks if they take drugs.
A noise then occurs downstairs, and he says he heard slamming downstairs which was like a plastic sound. He also says he heard something opening and closing, which he refers to as poltergeist activity. He clarifies again that he has nothing on him which he's been offering, and then goes back downstairs. He looks around a little and says something was being slammed open and closed. Stuart says he honestly doesn't know what the noise was and explains that he's shaking. His section ends with him saying everything's gone very quiet, and that he can only hear the rain. The camera then cuts to Glen.
Glen: The Upper Living Quarters Part 3
When the camera cuts back to Glen, he says he's excited to see if he's caught any evp, but does say it's been quiet. I like that he's referencing using a piece of technology to investigate with as I was surprised to see nothing at all aside cameras being used through this entire episode. He walks through some doors and stops to say it's taken on a very unusual feeling in that area since stepping through the doors. He refers to it feeling amiss.
He says the only thing he has definitely experienced so far is the smell of cigars, which is very good for him to say on camera. He calls out again, says hello, whistles, and asks for them to show themselves. Nothing happens, so he keeps wandering around and asks if there is anyone there in the hospital. He switches off more lights, asks for them to slam a door, and says he isn't afraid of them. I love the comment he says next, because he very cheekily says it would have been a great bit for Yvette to try on her own as it's so quiet. I really like all of the emphasis on how little activity Glen, the skeptic of the team, has been getting. It makes you wonder why Karl, Yvette, and Stuart were getting so much activity. Again, it's a point they should investigate. Is it just the locations they were in, or was it the people? You could throw Gregg in with that, but he wasn't getting anything anywhere near as clear.
Glen keeps calling out and says that it's not that he doesn't want stuff to happen, and that he is still expecting for something to happen. Again, it's interesting for him to say he's still expecting for something to happen, especially as something does happen. As he keep walking, he hears the sound of a tap running and says it wasn't running when he went past the room before. He says to the camera for Karl to check the footage to make sure it definitely wasn't running earlier as he has a bad memory, and then narration from Yvette says there was no sound of running water while playing footage of the first time he walked past the room. This is a very good replay and inclusion of narration. Glen also points out that it was a proper physical switch to move in order to be running as it was, and then leaves the area. The camera then cuts to Gregg.
Gregg: The Hospital Wing Part 3
When the camera cuts back to Gregg, he's calling out for the spirits to not just scare him and tip-toe around him but to actually throw something. He asks where they are and stops in a room with a good view down two directions. He keeps walking and says he can hear noises which make it seem like the spirit wants him in a particular location. He says he keeps thinking he sees something going past the door, asks where the spirits are, and then asks them to come forward. He also says he means no harm or disrespect, and that they can feel free to scare him.
This whole section is lots of Gregg walking around in circles chasing sounds he can hear, but that for the most part the camera isn't picking up. He says he can hear very faint tapping and says there's something about the particular location he's stood in by the door as when he's in the operating theatre he can hear noises coming from that spot. He asks for the spirits to come forwards and to show themself. He puts the camera back down while standing by the door in the corridor he keeps hearing noises from. Gregg says he can hear very faint tapping behind him, and that it's like something is calling him to that spot.
This leads Gregg to ask if the spirits are children, or if they're slightly more malevolent. I like that he's asked if the spirits are children because all he knows is the spirit seems to be playing with him. It completely contradicts what happened to Karl, but it fits in with the experience he is having in this moment. He goes on to say that he's tapping hearing noises from the operating theatre and says it's like he's getting the runaround. He explains this is because when he's in the operating theatre, he hears noises from in the corridor but when he's in the corridor, he hears much fainter tapping.
He then asks if there is something about Karl the spirits don't like and if they're waiting for him to return. I found this to be quite a funny comment as it does address that it may be something about Karl which has caused the activity. He then leaves the room and goes down the corridor to meet up with the others. As he does this, he says he's hearing a tapping noise again like it's calling him back to that spot. He says something is definitely there, and I am inclined to agree with him. It's a shame he didn't have any equipment with him aside a camera as I think he's have gotten something substantial with what he was experiencing. Granted, some bits of equipment wouldn't have been reliable due to the electricity in the building, but I think some equipment would have worked well.
The episode then ends with narration from Yvette saying they had to continue investigating due to there being so many locations to explore. She then explains that she sent herself and Glen to the hospital wing, Gregg to the old cottage, and Karl and Stuart to the witches cottage. The final shot of the episode is of Karl saying 'you can't really see it, but in the distance there is Pendle Hill' while the shot shows the area outside the witches cottage.

My Thoughts
I will go segment by segment here while discussing my thoughts as I think that's the best thing to do. To be very blunt, I think Yvette and Karl's investigation was very narrative driven. I think through this narrative of the location being horrible, they portrayed themselves as inexperienced paranormal investigators. When you look at the footage, they experienced knocks, a couple of moans, and some footsteps. They get knocking everywhere, and they have explored many 'creepy' locations, so I don't know why two moans and some footsteps will have put them on edge so much. I can understand Karl wanting to push a narrative to make it more entertaining, but they do so far too much here.
I like that they don't experience anything crazy because I don't think that's how the paranormal works, and so it made the investigation more believable. I do however acknowledge that Karl's face wasn't on camera for either male moan, their feet weren't shown when hearing footsteps, and there was a bit of a male voice which wasn't Karl's that occured while it was only Yvette and Karl in the building. Again, I'm not saying they're faking things as there is no clear proof of that, but they need to get into the habit of trying to film these important details. I know Karl said about cameras being expensive in the previous episode, but even if Yvette was filming on her phone it would be enough to at least get a second angle on the noises they hear.
Next, Stuart. Again, he came across like this was his first ever investigation. He doesn't film behind the counter when he hears noises downstairs, he doesn't film the door from outside when he hears the door open and close, and he doesn't film behind any doors. This is all stuff I've praised the team for doing in the past, but now that they're getting significant activity they aren't doing it. You have to question why. He also says that he'll be up the stairs in thirty seconds, which from a skeptical point of view you could argue is him letting whoever is up there making noise know how much time they have to hide.
There are also moments when he hears noises from upstairs, very loud banging, and nothing seems to fall from the ceiling. You can see paint is peeling from the ceiling, and that it barely looks to be holding on in the corner, yet you don't see any of it fall from what would be significant vibrations. It could be that the camera isn't picking it up, but it's still worth a mention.
Now for Glen. I found it really funny that Glen captures pretty much no activity. He's the skeptic, chances are he won't stand for any shenanigans, and so nothing really happens. You've got the smell of cigars, which he points out Karl likes to smoke, you've got laughter he doesn't hear so could just be an audio overlay, and then you've got a tap turning on. The tap could be legitimate evidence, but the location is so big that someone could easily have been there without him noticing to turn the tap on. Also, regarding the laughter, it was extremely coincidental that he mentions child's laughter very soon after that noise occurs. This does make me think it could very well have been an audio overlay. I want to be clear here that I do not think Glen fakes things, and I think this is evident through how little he gets through his segments.
Finally, Gregg. I don't really know how I feel about Gregg's segments. All that really happens for him is he keeps hearing tapping and footsteps. I really like that he, in a way, may subtly have called out Karl in a similar way to what Glen may have done. I also like how persistent he was in trying to replicate what Karl says he experienced. The footsteps and tapping though seems odd as it kept leading him away from that area. Gregg seems very genuine, and he seems to try his best with only the one camera as you do see him properly run to the sounds he hears and quickly show either end of the corridors. There are many doors and corridors though, so I really think he should have had one or two cameras in those corridors, along with one or two pieces of equipment. Even if he had some cat balls, I think that would have been interesting.
In conclusion, I think this was a very questionable episode for Most Haunted. I'm really looking forward to the future parts, but I think there are too many questions raised in this episode. I also think they should tell us what time each bit of footage was captured at so that we know what happened when for everyone. I'm going to quickly try and predict how much activity everyone will get in the next episode based on my assessments of everyone in this episode.
I think Yvette and Glen in the hospital wing will get some tapping, maybe bangs, possibly some footsteps too. I will be surprised if they get anything more extreme than that such as moans or doors slamming. If they do get anything more extreme, I will be very interested in Glen's reaction. I also think if anything more extreme happens, Yvette will be involved somehow such as when she picked up the snooker ball. I think Gregg in the old cottage might have a quieter investigation that what Stuart had. If he experiences things on the level of Stuart, I really hope he checks behind the doors and counter. I would have preferred for Glen to be by himself in the cottage as I do think nothing at all would happen, but I think with Gregg you might get tapping or footsteps again.
As for Karl and Stuart, all bets are off for what could occur in the witches cottage. I'm expecting loud banging. I'm also expecting for Karl to have some sort of direct experience, and for Stuart to have some sort of direct experience. I also think something will be thrown, or will fall from somewhere. I'm also expecting loud footsteps. Basically, I'm expecting for their segments to be the most active and will be incredibly surprised if they don't get anything.
